I wanted to get more HD space on my DVR so I just exchanged a RNG200 cable box for a RNG200n to get the bigger disk. My TV is a 12 year old 36" Panasonic tube TV with 4:3 aspect ratio, but it had no problem displaying 1080i (black bars on top and bottom of screen with some over scanning, but very usable) and then automatically switching to 480i when I selected a non-HD channel. I am using high quality composite cables to connect the TV to the cable box. The TV does not support HDMI.
I should note that before I got a new 55" LED TV, I was using the old Panasonic in another room on a RNG200n box that I have had for around 3 years. It worked just fine on that box, as well as the RNG200 I just returned.
I used the HD zoom key on my remote to go through the "easy setup" on the new RNG200n and it chose 1080i and 480i as the two resolutions. The HD channels now display in wide screen but at 480i. The non-HD channels display full screen on the TV. The display on the front of the RNG200n says HDTV 480i when on HD channels and 480i when on non-HD channels.
I found out by experimenting with the settings that if I use the advance setup and select only 1080i then the TV will use 1080i and display it properly on HD channels. When I only have 1080i, however, the non-HD channels have both the top and bottom as well as the sides cut off.
Can anyone tell me how I can set up this new RNG200n box so it automatically and properly switches between 480i and 1080i resolution depending on whether I select a HD or non-HD channel? Thanks.
