I have 4 HDTVs. One on a DVR, one on a standard cablebox, and two with just "TV Adapters"
I was hoping to switch from Comcast's DVR to a Tivo both because they are much better devices in most ways and also because I was hoping it would be cheaper in the long run. I know I would have to buy a Tivo, but I figured after that initial cost at least I wouldn't have to worry about equipment rental fees. However, I can't seem to come up with any numbers where I would not end up paying MORE.
Regardless of the model of Tivo(I am still a bit confused what models offer what), pretty much any model that would work with Comcast's TV service seems to cost a monthly fee of $15 or an annual fee of $150 (What's the point of an annual fee that costs the same as paying by the month? Don't yearly fees normally cost less than a monthly one to get people to pay for a whole year at once?), my DVR rental fee is $10. At first I thought it would cost more than double due to the cablecard which also costs $10, but then I read that Comcast lets you rent your first Cablecard for free..... still though, that's a simple $15 to pay for the (mandatory) Tivo service over $10 to rent a DVR from Comcast(The lifetime $550 fee is just WAY too expensive to consider)...
So... is it as simple as that? There is no way I can use a Tivo for cheaper than it costs to rent a DVR from Comcast since it would cost $5 more a month? Or do the Tivos support connecting multiple TVs to them somehow so that one Tivo could service at least two or more of my TVs in the house and I wouldn't need to pay for rental fees for those too? Or would I ALSO need to pay Tivo for a subscription for whatever box I would need to connect the other TVs to as well?
Do I have any options in this whatsoever where I will wind up paying less in the long run if I go Tivo?

[X1] xi5 and xi6 are they out yet and if not when will they be out?
Has Comcast launched the xi5 or xi6 yet? If not any idea when they will launch them? I could really use one in a spare bedroom with no cable line. An wireless dta would be even better for that room actually.
A little off topic but when will the XB6 gigabit modem/gateway be out?
↧
[Install] Xi5 requires a professional install?
I called Comcast today and wanted to get an Xi5 for a TV that cannot have coax run to it and the tech support rep was building the order for an SIK then transferred me to loyalty to see if they would give me HBO free for a year to offset the cost. When the loyalty rep was done getting supervisor approval for the HBO, she noticed that an order wasn’t placed and she called tech support to make sure and they said that I can do an SIK since I have an XB6 with MoCA enabled and an XG1v4 but she highly recommended a tech do the install because she’s taken a lot of calls for failed SIKs with them.
Now I’m being told that it has to be a pro install, they aren’t available for SIKs even though I had two reps ready to set them up.
What’s the deal here? I have a tech scheduled for Wednesday but I really don’t want them tearing apart my network if I don’t have to.

[X1] New ARRIS XG1v4 DVR

On the X1 TV Box Comparison page https://www.xfinity.com/support/cable-tv/x1-hub-vs-companion-box/ , a new "ARRIS XG4 XG1v4" X1 gateway DVR box is now shown to be available in "select markets only."
The Feature Comparison table at the bottom of that page indicates that it has 6 tuners, but similar to the non-DVR XG2, can only pause and rewind live TV up to 25 minutes, most likely by using an SD card also.
There's also an article about it on the Light Reading site today, which reports that it is supposedly 4K/UHD and HDR capable:
Comcast Appears to Soft Launch First 4K DVR
By Mari Silbey, Light Reading - May 19, 2017
http://www.lightreading.com/video/4k-8k-video/comcast-appears-to-soft-launch-first-4k-dvr/d/d-id/732973quote:Well look what the Internet turned up. On a Comcast support page, the cable operator is now referencing an Arris XG4 DVR set-top, available in select markets only. The specs on the page don't advertise it, but multiple sources have told Light Reading that the product is a set-top that supports 4K Ultra HD and High Dynamic Range (HDR) video. And it may be Comcast's first 4K box on the market.
The XG4 DVR ... is reportedly going live now or in the near future in limited markets, which would explain why the product is showing up on an X1 support page. It's noteworthy, however, that Comcast doesn't reference 4K support among the specifications. Comcast has already been dinged for falling behind on its 4K roadmap, and the company may be wary of promoting a product launch until the DVR has gained some traction in the field.
Comcast has not yet responded to a request for comment about the DVR.
Among the specs that Comcast does list for the XG4 are six TV tuners, a 25-minute buffer for pausing and rewinding live TV, compatibility with the X1 voice remote, and support for AnyRoom DVR and X1 TV apps. ...
EDIT: that X1 TV Box Comparison page has now been updated to label this as the "XG1v4" there: https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r31468910-
I have therefore updated the subject line of this thread accordingly.

[Firmware] Why are there 2 daily STB firmware updates?
They seem to come about an hour apart and the message for the second one is slightly different than the first. I have the cxd01ani.
Incidentally, why can't Comcast boxes update when the box is "off" like U-Verse boxes do?

[Comcast Equip] The X1-Files (STB's No Longer Turn Off)
When I first came back to Comcast 2 years ago or so, when you turned the box off with the button on the box or from one of the side menus(which you can no longer can do, you have have to dig down into the settings and do it) it actually turned off. It no longer turns off. I know this because it doesn't boot up anymore when I turn it back on. It turns on normally. I also know this because the box is warm even after being "off" for 10 hours or so. Apparently Comcast is in cahoots or conglomeration with my power company. Well I'm not gonna be one of the sheeple. From now on I'm gonna just unplug the box. I know Comcast isn't gonna like that and send the Comcast MIB's to disappear me and rendition me to some god-awful place (like California). If you don't hear from me for more than a week, you need to call Moulder and Scully. Trust no one! :p
Something else that went away recently was the Comcast Labs HDMI function that turns the TV off with the box. Another indication of a conspiracy between Comcast and my powerco.

[DVR] External Hard Drive
I had two DVRs as I was told this weekend that you can hook up an external drive now and it'll work with the X1 DVRs. I asked multiple times and in the store it would work with my X1 DVR and I was told yes.

[NEWS] Acorn TV Nets Comcast Deal
Acorn TV, the SVOD service focused on British and international television programs, has gained distribution on Comcast’s set-top box VOD platform and the service provider’s Xfinity Stream app for smartphones, tablets and web browsers.
Acorn TV, a service that’s also marketed as a standalone OTT service, said the agreement with Comcast marks the first time it’s available on an MVPD set-top box.

Acorn TV, a service owned by RLJ Entertainment, is being offered on Comcast set-top boxes via the MSO’s managed VOD system and not over-the-top via the internet.
Acorn TV, which features originals such as BBC comedy Detectorists and ITV drama Girlfriends, is being offered via Comcast for $4.99 per month, the same as the SVOD service’s standalone price.

[X1] "Resume" function missing
So I just had this issue on my XG1v3 DVR box. I had recorded "SWAT" tonight to watch later. I began watching it later in the night but after about 25 or so minutes into the episode I decided to go to bed. Couldn't sleep so got up and turned the tv on again. Went to resume watching SWAT however the "Resume" function did not appear in the menu. I tried a couple of different ways but no option to Resume nor even Restart. Basically couldn't view that recording.
So I told the X1 box to Restart itself. That seemed to fix the issue. I wish I would have tried one of the other TV with the XiD boxes to see if it duplicated. I did not try other recordings either. Stupid me. ;)

[NEWS] Comcast Will Drop Big Ten Network
Rumors have been circulating today that Comcast will be dropping the Big Ten Network across the nation in May, and has already done so in markets outside of the Big Ten’s footprint. At first, I was skeptical, though I saw the same quote repeated across many boards. I was able to reached out to a Comcast representative today, and one of their employees confirmed that the Big Ten Network would no longer be available:
This wasn’t the most conventional way to get confirmation about Comcast’s decision, but it will do for now as there has yet to be an official confirmation. Of course, I only confirmed it for the Ann Arbor area, but given that they are dropping it from the market where a Big Ten school is located, I think it is safe to assume that they will drop it across the entire Big Ten footprint.

[X1] Question about wifi cable TV box
My son recently moved into an old house and the existing CATV wiring is a mess. Today he was told two things by the Xfinity tech who came by. First he said that you had to use their modem if you wanted to use wifi cable boxes and then said that they don't support more than two wifi boxes.
He would rather buy his own modem and use Google wifi for a mesh network. He needs four TVs using a wifi cable box. Is this possible... was the tech correct? Thanks

[Other] Strange question about cable TC signal strength
Hello - first post to this forum.
I recently got Comcast service. To start off, I asked the tech to enable the TV feed in only one room (many home run circuits are available at the outside junction box - I personally mapped them). He left all others disconnected. He claimed that having "unused" home runs connected to the incoming feed (via splitter manifolds) degrades the cable signal.
This is counterintuitive. Can someone please confirm this, or declare it a myth?
